ABOUT

When I was 19, I somehow convinced my parents that I should spend the summer traveling cross-country with friends to gather stories to write the Great American Novel instead of working and saving money for college. I have yet to write that novel, but I'm incredibly honored and humbled nonetheless to have had a long, enjoyable career telling other people's stories as a journalist and nonfiction author.

As a longtime award-winning journalist, author, writer, columnist, editor and freelancer, my work can be found in numerous places — magazines, books, newspapers, websites and here.

My latest book, LATitude: How You Can Make a Live Apart Together Relationship Work, was published by Cleis Press on July 9, 2024.

My book on changing the ageist and sexist narratives about aging as a woman, Not Too Old For That: How Women Are Changing the Story of Aging (Rowman & Littlefield), was published in 2022, and was named a Best Book of 2022 by Take The Lead and earned praise by former supermodel and pro-aging activist Paulina Porizkova.

In 2014, I co-wrote The New I Do: Reshaping Marriage for Skeptics, Realists and Rebels (Seal Press), which was featured in a Modern Love essay in The New York Times, and was named a Best Book of 2014 by PopSugar.

A native New Yorker, I have called the San Francisco Bay Area home for more than three decades and am usually hiking or cycling when I'm not at my computer. I'm the proud mom of two wonderful young men and dogmom to a slightly neurotic rescue, Mia.
